Week 2 - Camera Use - Shutter Speed - Research

-The Shutter Speed can freeze, capture and blur the movement.
- I already know how to change the shutter speed by pressing the shutter speed button on my cannon camera

Richard Avedon

Richard Avedon (May 15, 1923 – October 1, 2004) was an American fashion and portrait photographer. An obituary published in The New York Times said that "his fashion and portrait photographs helped define America's image of style, beauty and culture for the last half-century".[1]

He was a self taught photographer. He liked taking photographs of people which is a portrait. He also did fashion photography.

The book that I looked at was 20th Century Photography which was published in 2012. Page 28 to 33.

I think Richard Alvedon  taken this photo with fast shutter speed at 1/100. Straight on angle headshot. There is no motion blur in the photo because the shutter speed is fast.

The photo is tightly cropped. He has got glasses on so he can protect his eyes and so that he can see very clearly. I think  the photo has fast shutter speed  1/100. Straight on angle headshot.

My thought is this third photo has been taken with a medium shutter speed at 1/60. He used high f-stop. There is motion blur on his arms. His face is frozen. He moved his arms.

Francesca Woodman

Francesca Stern Woodman (April 3, 1958 – January 19, 1981) was an American photographer best known for her black and white pictures featuring either herself or female models. Many of her photographs show young women who are nude, blurred (due to movement and long exposure times), merging with their surroundings, or whose faces are obscured. Her work continues to be the subject of much critical acclaim and attention, years after she killed herself at the age of 22, in 1981.[1][2][3][4][5]

Francesca Woodman in this first photo is sitting against the wall with her hand on her face. I think the photo has a fast shutter speed at 1/250. One guess is that the floor looks a complete mess.

Francesca Woodman in this second photo is moving because one guess is that the photo has been taken with a very slow shutter speed at 1/30. Motion blur on the whole body because it is a slow shutter speed.

Francesca Woodman in this third photo is moving so one guess might be that the photo has been taken with a slow shutter speed at 1/30.
