Week 3 - Camera Use - Vantage Point, Fore/Mid/Background - Research

I'm going to research Herbert List and William Klein

Herbert List

Herbert List was a German photographer, who worked for magazines, including Vogue, Harper's Bazaar, and Life, and was associated with Magnum Photos. Wikipedia
Herbert List was born into a Jewish family in Hamburg on October 7, 1903.
After he completed his education, he left for an extended two-year trip to South America and the US on business for his father’s coffee import company, List & Heinecken. From 1928-1936, Herbert List was a stockholder and employee of the company in Hamburg. However, he started to become interested in photography and decided to become a photographer, encouraged in this by his friend Andreas Feininger.

    BornOctober 7, 1903, Hamburg, Germany
    DiedApril 4, 1975, Munich, Germany

He was from Germany. He took some photos for magazines. He took photos of classically posed black and white compositions.
All of his photos are in black and white that I've found on the website and they have got good contrast.
1936

Herbert List has taken this photo at a low to straight on angle. The man looks tall because of the low angle.

Portofino, 1936

He has taken this photo from a low to straight on angle vantage point. The dog looks big because he's looking up at it from low angle.

Anna Magnani, Rome, 1950.

He took this photo at a straight on angle so I'm looking at her at the same level. She looks the normal size.

I like Herbert Lists Photos because the light is good and there is shadow from bright lights. The photo is correctly exposed.

William Klein

Born April 19th 1928

He is from America. He takes photos for photojournalism and fashion photography. He uses unusual photographic techniques.

He began his career in 1948 in Paris. He trained as a painter. He discovered Photography in the early fifty's. He used unconventional techniques which could be angle, lighting and motion blur.

I've looked at the book called The Photography Book Published in 1997. Page 247. I've also looked at 20th Centry Photography Published in 1996. Page 348 to 353.

Bikini, Moscow, 1959

There is a woman in the foreground, a man in the mid ground on a chair and another woman sitting on the seat in the background. The woman in the foreground is in focus and this photo also uses rule of thirds.

Tatiana and Marie Rose, Morocco, 1958

Two people in the foreground and camels in the midground. Another person in the background.

Vogue, 1960

The person in the foreground is in focus. The river in the background is out of focus. I think it is a shallow depth of field.

I like William Klein's photos because he thinks about every part of the photos because I like the reflection which is in the background. It is lit evenly with no harsh shadows.
